Shade's Head Designer, Lyndsay, shares Fall 2009 Style Inspirations

A couple of weeks ago I landed in NYC eager to start my search for Fall 2010 design inspirations. As I walked the streets of Soho one evening during “Fashion’s Night Out”, a new event that the city of New York has established in order to boost the economy, I found that all I could focus on was all the amazing individual style that each person portrayed. This inspired me to really reflect on my own personal style….What was I going to embrace for this up-coming season? Here are a few things that I am really excited about:

One dreaded word….LEGGINGS. These can be your best friend, or your worst enemy. An understated pair of simple black leggings is a wardrobe staple. I found a great pair at my favorite store, Uniqlo. I opted for a sleek, simple pair with a row of small black buttons at the ankle. My favorite look is to pair these with a blazer, boyfriend tee, and a nice pair of flats. Here is another great option from American Apparel...

WHIMSICAL JEWELRY. I am really into anything vintage or vintage-inspired right now, especially when it comes to jewelry. I am also seeing a lot of pieces that evoke a sense of child-like fantasy. I recently came across Cosmic Firefly, a collection that is super cute and affordable on Etsy.

BLAZERS. I cannot get enough of this season’s blazer jacket. I am loving the over-sized, boxy silhouette with the rolled up sleeve. It is so versatile, I love this one below from Urban Outfitters. Wear with a t-shirt and jeans for a casual look, or dress it up with a great accessory, like a watercolor floral or sleek sequined scarf.

Speaking of sequins…..this brings me to my most favorite, this amazing SEQUINED VEST that I recently purchased from H&M. Here’s another example of a fabulous key piece that can instantly update your wardrobe. Below is a similar one by Derek Lam.

Happy 5 Years From Chelsea

I still can’t believe Shade has been in business 5 years. I really wouldn’t believe it if it weren’t for the new assortment of lines on my face and grays in my hair. The beginning seems like it was just yesterday. Using my Christmas closet as our “warehouse", printing and packing orders til 4 in the morning, strangers knocking on my door looking for “those really long shirts” -- all a part of the fond memories I have of the early days of Shade. I had no clue where (or if) it would be in 5 years but thanks to all of you, family, friends and the amazing employees at Shade, we are still here and have accomplished more than I ever dreamed. Here is to makeup, my hair stylist and another amazing 5 years!!

New Online

Our floral Scarves in yellow color way and black and white color way, so cute to throw over any top...

Buy and Give

I have to say, I can easily fall in love with any flat strappy sandal, but Sseko Designs, said like "say-co", are for a great cause, so I really can't resist. Sseko is a not-just-for-profit business that enables women in Uganda to make money towards university educations. These would be so cute for bridesmaids, as featured on Design Mom, or summer casual with cuffed jeans and one of our layering basics...

Check out these adorable designs...

coconut butter cookies

i love, love, love these cookies. they are little buttery bites of delight. i suggest you make them. and make them soon. your mouths and taste buds and friends and neighbors will thank you.

1 pkg. (14 oz.) sweetened, shredded coconut
1 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup chilled, unsalted butter, cut into pieces
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups flour (i used 1/2 cup of wheat and the rest white)

preheat oven to 350°. set aside 2 loosely packed cups of coconut on a plate. Place remaining coconut in food processor along with sugar, salt, and baking powder; process until finely ground. add butter, and process just until no lumps remain. add egg and vanilla; process just until smooth. add flour; pulse until a crumbly dough begins to form, scraping sides of bowl as needed (do not over-mix).

roll into balls, coating with coconut. (that didn't work well for me so i threw most of the coconut back in the bowl and mixed it around with my hands till it was pretty evenly dispersed.)

bake until lightly golden, 20-25 minutes. (i checked them at 15 - and i think that was plenty of time) cool on baking sheets 1-2 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Plaid Tunic

Our item of the week, the Plaid tunic, is one of those pieces that can be worn a million different ways, alone, with a cardigan over it, belted, with jeans, with leggings, with a vest, or with a long sleeve underneath when the temperatures drop. Featured below are some ideas on how to style with leggings...

Forever 21 Plain leggings in grey, $5.80: the grey color really compliments the tones in the tunic with out being overly matchy.
Target Mossimo flat brown riding boots, $34.99: a knee high ridding boot is perfect for leggings and a tunic, it will flatter the leg and the color will be beautiful with the shades in the tunic.
Topshop brown satchel bag, $60.00: I love this washed leather! I think this bag is a great investment and of course looks great with the plaid tunic.
Modcloth brown braided belt, $29.99: a thick belt will give you a waist, I love that it is braided, even though it was a thing of the 90's, it is back and works perfectly for this look!
Urban Outfitters chain and pearl necklace, $24.99 and Urban Outfitters Goldmine ring, $24.00: a little bit of pearls and gold coming thru from under the mandarin collar on the tunic will add just enough femininity to the plaid tunic, and I love the gold mine ring, its big enough to make a statement but not overpowering.
